Customer called me informing me he thinks his turbocharger has failed. I go over to the address and find it has and the impeller has broken off and the blades have fouled on the scroll of the turbocharger.
The oil pressure light was also on and this isn’t uncommon when a turbo has failed and the bearing can collapse and engine oil will just pump into the inlet/exhaust system.
I blank off the oil feed to the turbo and the issue persists.
Oil pressure test at the oil pressure switch and there is 0 bar of pressure. Normal is approx 2 bar (about 30psi)
Removed sump and checked pick up -ok
Removed hex drive from oil pump and found the hex drive has worn round.
New part on order
Next course of action is to get oil pressure before any more repairs carried out.
…..to be continued
